I thought to post info about expat auto insurance. Perhaps it will help someone in the future.
The only company I found that offers such a policy is clements.com I've been using them now for almost a year. The annual premium is nearly double what it cost to insure the same car in the US. Probably because they have no competition. Italian companies will not insure a car with US plates. If someone knows of another that does, please share.
Anyway, I had a fender bender a few months back. Actually, someone hit my car in a parking lot. They put a big dent in the door of my 2013 mid-sized SUV. They didn't stick around or leave a note. I was pretty upset about it. I immediately called Clements and submitted a claim. They got right on it. Communication was excellent. The longest part of the process was waiting for the parts to arrive from the US (replacement door). The local body shop fixed in a week. Came out great :)
I'm still with Clements and still very happy. In case you are wondering, I don't work for them. Just a happy customer :)
