opening a Euro account in Italy

I have a sum of money that I will be using to hopefully buy an apartment in Sicily this summer. At the moment the Euro is very very low against the currency I have and would like a way of converting the money to Euro now and still earn some minimal interest on the money.

Has anyone managed to open an Italian bank account as a non-resident/non-Italian citizen? Were there any problems transferring money to it? Ideally I would like to do this without travelling to Italy.

thanks in advance for any ideas.
