Re aquiring italian citizenship

My Italian husband took out Canadian citizenship before it was possible to have dual nationality. Now we are retired he would like to move back to Italy. I have British and Canadian passports. He only has a Canadian passport, but when we were in italy last year, he was told that he could return to live there without any problems. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on this?
