Would greatly appreciate input from a non-Italian EU citizen (or anyone who knows) on this topic (see below - copied from the expatexchange website), specifically on the part that describes health care ..... and have comprehensive sickness insurance cover.......
After researching and speaking with people in the know, I was under the impression that a EU citizen is covered, just like any Italian, under the national health care system, i.e. has the same rights, access etc. I'm a EU citizen and will be moving to Italy later this year (retiring). Regardless of whether or not I am entitled to be covered, I am still considering whether to continue with my employer's healthcare plan OR sign up for a 'local' Italian/European one. I do not have any pre-existing conditions and am in good health, if that also helps to answer the question. The reason I am considering additional coverage either way would be to have a more private level environment and care if/when....
Any suggestions for which company to use would be welcome.

EU Citizens Obtaining Residency in Italy
According to the Polizia di Stato, "Union citizens have the right of residence in Italy for a period of longer than three months if they are workers or self-employed persons in Italy; have sufficient resources for themselves and their family members not to become a burden on the social assistance system during their period of residence and have comprehensive sickness insurance cover, or any other equivalent means; are enrolled at a private or public establishment for the purpose of following a course of study, including vocational training and have sufficient resources for themselves and their family members not to become a burden on the social assistance system and a comprehensive sickness insurance cover; are family members accompanying or joining a Union citizen who has the right to reside in Italy for more than three months."
