Home security? Roma / Gypsy concerns.

I'm trying not to offend but in the Veneto there always seems to be security concerns at certain times of the year when it comes due to the influx of the Roma's or Gypy's. It's a real concern , enough so that the Carb's actually give classes on Post to warn of the dangers and how to spot potential issues.
How do you protect your property when you are not there? Private company? Friends?
