requirement to put thousands of euros in Italian bank

We are applying to renew our permesso di soggiorno for two years. At the questura where we applied for the first permesso, a clerk told us we would be required to place 30,000 euros apiece into an Italian bank when we applied for renewal. I've looked online and have found nothing that confirms that, nor does the application we're about to file mention it. Does anyone know if this is indeed required?
