Buying A Car for Italian/USA Dual CItizens

For those of us who are dual citizens, we are able to buy a car without first having residency in Italy. This was told to me today by the owner of a car dealership in Abruzzo. We were informed that we just need an A.I.R.E. certificate. Since we don't have that, only our Italian passports and carta d'identita, I have now asked if these will suffice, If not, we will write for the certificate from our comune in Italy.
