Transferring Italian retirement to US

I've worked in Italy at an Italian agency for 4 years, and so part of my income has gone into the Italian retirement fund.

I'm moving back to the USA, and don't want to lose that money. Does anyone have experience in this?

As a quick background: I spoke with INPS, and they basically quoted a lengthy document to me that made no sense. I asked at a local CAF and the instructors during my apprendistato course too, and they both told me I need to approach this from the USA end. But I'm still stuck, and have no idea who to ask; and I don't take this advice at face-value (because past experience says there are many layers to anything bureaucratic).

Anyone who has gone through this experience and has advice -- many thanks!
