Residency/Tax timing

Getting ready to depart for Italy on Sunday. It still seems surreal! last minute cleaning, errands and questions!

I know the 183 day rule - question is - I was speaking with a woman who works for an Italian organization here in NY - she suggested that I postpone applying for residency until July - which would allow me to defer taxes for 2017. Her thinking was that I could be a tourist from April through June, and that no one would be the wiser. My question is - is this doable without repercussions, as it would still put me over the 183 day mark.
