We had a very disappointing meeting at the SF consulate today. We had secured a binding contract (on both us and a landlord) with deposit requiring us to sign a 3+2 year lease on a specific property as soon as we arrived in Italy. But that was apparently insufficient for the consulate, which has recently established a requirement for a fully signed multi-year lease registered with the Entrate. Never mind that this requirement is not cited on their website. (They only previously demanded proof of lodging.)
This would seem to suggest that the successful candidate must be able to maintain abodes in two places, because visa issuance is never assured.
Be forewarned.
