US Partner obtaining Italian Long Term Residency

Hi! My partner and I are looking to move to Italy in the next year or so and trying to figure out our best course of action. She has Italian Citizenship and has lived there before, I however have only US Citizenship. We've looked at a couple possibilities and are currently exploring whether or not anyone has gone the civil union route in order to obtain a long term residency visa.
