Suggestions for Sardinia

My wife and I have rented a home in Lucca for two months, Jan/Feb attending a language school for a few weeks, exploring a part of Italy I have not explored before and seeking a possible long-term rental as we apply for residency. Our third month of our 90-day visa we are uncertain at this time. However, we would like to spend some time in Sardinia as we have never been there. My question is which town would be better to visit Alghero or Cagliari? Would a week be too much? Now before anyone reminds me that it will be probably cold and rainy we are well aware of that LOL. Alternatively, we have thought about Sicily or perhaps Puglia. But I have always wanted to see Sardinia, so that is first on my list. My grandfather was from Agropoli and I have visited that region a lot.
