1 year in Italy with teens

Hi- I have a sabbatical coming up from my University and we are considering living in Italy for the year (my husband and I and our twin 14 year old boys). Trying to think of where to live. Near a transportation hub to visit other countries is important. Somewhere not too expensive. How to begin the search? Any advice? Many thanks! ~Annie
