Traveling on Receipt + Expired Permesso

I'm sure this has been discussed on here, but I can't seem to find any recent and in-depth discussion of people's actual experiences traveling while waiting on the renewal to be processed for a permesso di soggiorno.

I know that officially you can travel on the post office receipt + expired permesso from Italy to OUT of the Schengen zone (and vice versa). But that any travel across Schengen zone borders could be problematic.

So in other words, you can fly direct to the U.S. no problem from Rome, but you can't have a connecting flight in, say, Germany. The logic, I gather, being that only Italy recognizes the validity of the post office ricevuta, correct?

Anyways, has anyone had any direct experience, good or bad, with traveling in that interval between permesso expiration and permesso renewal?

Thanks!
