Has Anyone Had Medicare and Dropped It

I am leaving for a 2-month trip to the US in few weeks and am still deciding whether to opt in to Medicare (would need to do it by July 31 - before I leave for the US), or to purchase travel insurance, so I have health coverage while visiting.

I'm wondering if anyone has opted into Medicare and then opted out, and how long the process took?

I wish I had until the end of August to decide, as my trip back to the US will help to clarify what my next steps are.

Thanks for your insight.
