Acquiring Lost Citizenship - Redo

Greetings All : I am currently living in Conversano Puglia to "acquire my lost citizenship" meaning I came here without an elective residency visa and I am starting the process here in the commune where my grandfather was born. Right now I can legally stay for 90 days. Some family issues are transpiring back in the US and I might have to return in a few months. With that said, is it okay to start this process (just about to send in my permesso packet and get my receipt to stay, then go to the municipality to start the residency process) knowing I might have to leave ? Will it be impossible to start the whole process over if started and then have to leave ? Thank you in advance for any input.
