Tuscany Location

Dear friends,
I'm trying to locate towns in the more northern part of Tuscany, that still have the classic rolling hills vista. We have friends relocating to the Garfagnana area, and we'd like to be as close as possible, but not in the mountainous areas such as Barga. Any advice on Pistoia? Areas near Lucca or in the Pisa region? We'd like to eventually settle part of the year in a town with a decent sized population, an active community, and some other expats. Big question!!
