Apartment break-ins

Looking for recommendations on how to protect one's apartment and contents from break-ins. Learned over the holidays that they are fairly common. In the US I didn't personally know anyone who had their home robbed. The opposite is true in Milano. Practically everyone I asked has had a robbery. The most concerning aspect is that they turn the house inside out and look through everything with a fine tooth comb. I'd like to keep some of my family heirlooms and jewelry. Any help would be appreciated. Learning about these break-ins New Year's eve has been a shock.
