Identity card necessary

Hi all,

I am moving to Italy for two years beginning in May. I will be going for work, so they are covering health insurance. I know that I need to obtain a residence permit, but is the Carta d'identità still required if I don't need to apply for health insurance? It looks like I may need it for ease of traveling to different countries. Thank you for any help!
