Do they keep the original documents?

Hello Everyone. As you all know from a previous post of mine I will getting my Italian Citizenship from my Father or Mother both born in Italia. I have both of their original birth certificates and marriage license and my Fathers naturalization certificate. My question is when I go to the questura to get my PdiS will they keep the originals and just copy them and return them to me or do they keep the originals till everything is processed? I went on the website on the 'commune's ' that my parents were born in to try to get a certified copy so I do not have to give them the originals but I have had no luck with the two communes they do not even mention about requesting documents. Any suggestions how I can obtain them before I actually go to Italia, besides trying to go in person?
