Residency and home purchase

I have been house shopping in Puglia the past 2 years. Is it better, tax wise, to become a resident before I purchase my home? I plan on living part-time in Italy, but do not want to be concerned about limiting my time. I am 2nd gen 100% Italian, but unable to obtain dual citizenship.
Any advice is appreciated!
