Long Term Visa

My husband and I are planning to travel to Italy and stay a year. Any ideas on how to make getting a long term visa easier? It seems easy but there are always secrets.....those Italians!
We lived a year in Nice, France without knowing we needed a visa...never was a problem...guess we were lucky no one caught us. This was in 2000.
Now I am just trying to figure out where to land...too many beautiful options.
