Totalization Agreement

Is there anyone who can speak knowledgeably about the Totalization Agreement between Italy and the US? I have read about it some. But I would like to hear from people who have availed themselves of its protection to get the benefit of their experience.
For those not familiar with it, in a very small nutshell, the Totalization Agreement allows citizens of the US and Italy to pay social security taxes to only one country so that they don’t pay tax to both countries on the same earnings. That means, for example, that if you work here, you can opt out of paying into the Italian government pension system (I.e. Italian social security—“INPS”) and instead pay US federal taxes. (I think). Has anyone done the paperwork? I understand that you have to get a certificate of coverage from the Social Security Administration and present it to the INPS. But I am not entirely sure. And I don’t know how simple or complicated it is to do. Can anyone speak to this? Thanks.
