Getting Married to an Italian

I am a UK citizen with an Italian girlfriend, currently living in the UK but moving to Italy in Spring.

If we get married in Rome, our plan, I understand it would take some years to get Italian residency. But my question is, in the meantime, can I stay indefinitely?
