traveling outside schengen expired permesso

Dear All,
This seems to have been talked around but never addressed but apologies for potential crossposting. I have a permesso under renewal and a receipt from the post office. I need to know if I can go to England and come back. Every website (and when I talked to the questera in person) only references permissible travel outside the schengan zone when traveling to and from your country (in my case the USA). This would just be to England and back. Knowledge? Ideas? Thank you!
