Reconnaissance trip

Ive been reading this forum for quite awhile. I'd like to eventually live in Italy. Maybe start next year?
I'm planning on coming to EU in Aug, Sept & maybe Oct, for a reconnaissance trip. I still haven't made my mind up where I'd like to park myself for a good life. I've not etched in stone how long I plan to come & be a tourist, while checking out possible places to live later.
Do I need to get any paperwork if I'm just coming for "tourist" travel? I realize I can only be there for 3 months, max. I'm not 100% sure how long I'll be traveling. I'm kind of a fly by the seat gal. I'll see how long I stay once I get there. I may be there a couple of weeks. I may be there for the 3 months. Also, I do plan to go to other place, ie: Portugal, Spain, maybe somewhere else. Since I'm just being a tourist on this trip, do I need more than my passport & make sure I'm out in 3 months or less?
