Where are the best places to live?

I am a single, 55 year old woman, a writer, and I want to pursue my dream of living in Italy. I have been taking Italian for three years and am afraid to speak, but of course, living there, I am pretty sure I would get fluent fast. I know I want to be within an hour of a major airport. I don't think a big city is for me, but I am interested in the Florence area. I have been to many places, but not the south, so that also interests me. Would love advice if anyone has found any great places to recommend.

Wouldn't it be great if we started an I Want to Find My New Home tour? We could get a guide and go to the secret wonderful places, AKA not the touristy destinations.
