Visa Electiva

I am still "in Attesa' at the Italian Embassy in Mexico City to ask for a Visa Electiva. I imagine because of the high tourist season. I'll wait a few more months and see.
Does anyone know of a "creative" way to get a long stay in Italy? I want to buy an apartment and not have to worry about leaving every 90 days.
