Trouble with police

Hi. I'm not an expat yet, but considering it. I have been dating a Jamaican woman for about 9 months. She lives in Westmoreland.

I have a serious problem and am looking for advice. Some of you may be aware of the recent surge in gang violence western Jamaica. Last Tuesday, 7 people were killed, including two children, in Grange Hill. This prompted a big police crackdown in Westmoreland, particularly in Grange Hill and Savanna-la-Mar.

My girlfriend was contacted by the police and told to come to the station to be questioned. This also happened to her mother, her brother, her sister, her daughter, and several cousins. After that, I did not hear from my girlfriend until today (6 days later). Her daughter was released from custody and called me to tell me what happened.

Apparently her entire family is being accused of being gang members by the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation (C-TOC) Branch of the JCF. They are being held until some kind of trial next week.

I need help. Does anyone know how I would go about getting my girlfriend out of jail? Should I contact the Jamaican embassy in the US? Should I try to contact the police directly? Should I try to hire a lawyer in Jamaica? Does anyone have any ideas?

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
