Moving to Almaty in August end 2009

Dear All,

Just received my transfer orders to Almaty. I have visited Almaty once in 2002 on my way to Tajikistan. I stayed both while going and returning from Tajikistan at Hotel Kazakhstan. The only thing I remember is the simple meal and a beer at the hotel that cost me over 83 $; loud noise of girls that lined the street (prostitutes?) in front of the hotel, and very very dirty toilet at the Almaty airport.

With the oil and gas price going through the roof, I am sure things must have changed now and must have changed for better.

I am a single father with a 15 year old boy. I have already contacted AIS and they are ready to offer a place for my son. Now comes the tough part...1) to find a safe neighborhood and rent a reasonably cheap ~2500$ two bedroom/bathroom place closer to AIS; 2) seek information on places to buy furniture, kitchenware etc; c) seek information on places to hangout and meet people; and d) contact social network etc...

If you live or have lived in Almaty, I would appreiate your help. Also some frank and open opinion about Almaty...

Many thanks. Ben
