Would like advice on living in Malaysia

My husband works in the oil industry. Our children are all going to be out of the house this year and I would like to take this time between them leaving and my husband retiring to be able to see the world as he has been able to. He works with a lot of Malaysian people, and we have decided that we would like to live in Malaysia for a little while. The people are nice, it seems beautiful, and it's close to many other countries that I would like to visit. I can't afford the MM2H program. What would be other options that I could use to be able to stay long term? I would not be working, and my husband's income would be from outside the country as he works whereever his country sends him. Would it be possible to live for say a year in Malaysia legally as a tourist?
