What is Best visa for spending 6 months per year in Penang

I am an American Citizen and my wife is a Singapore Citizen with an American PR (Green Card).

Having recently retired and having spent considerable time in South East Asia over the years we would like to spend four to six months each year in Penang. Can anybody please advise the best visa for us, and is there a difference in the visa approach between my wife and myself?
