Malaysia on a Whim

My name is Glen. I am 31 single male from the mid-west U.S. I woke up a few weeks ago and decided I needed to move out of country. I started researching places in SE Asia, and I think of all the places I have researched, Penang is tops on the list. I have been to a couple different places in Asia, and have really enjoyed it.

I talked to my boss and he says I can move and he will allow me to work from home, wherever that is, but he won't pay for a move, visa, transportation back and forth, etc. It is all on me. I am willing to take on the cost to change things up a little and do something more with my life.

I have read a lot about retired life in Malaysia, but that isn't me. I will still be working 40-50 hours a week and doing it probably in the off hours of business hours because of the time differences as my job is customer service related.

Is Malaysia a good place for someone in my situation, youngish, working, and single? If not, might there be a different place that you may have lived that would be more ideal?

Being that I am not going to be working for a Malaysian company, will I still need a work visa, or can I get a different kind that won't take as long to process and still allow me to stay there for as long as I would like?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!!
