Moving to Mexico with young children

We are looking to spend a year abroad in Mexico. Our goals are to become fluent in Spanish (we both speak some Spanish), experience Mexican culture while still being connected to an expat community, including other families with kids, to be close to beaches and close to culture. We've looked into Baja 1st, Sea of Cortez because of the calm waters. We like snorkeling/kayaking/paddle boarding - we are not surfers and want safe beaches for small children. One of us is a musician and the other a painter. We want to be close to an arts community and bonus if there is also yoga/holistic health. We prefer not to live in a city but rather a small town with larger town or urban access. We've looked into Baja and Nayarit/Yucatan thus far. Appreciate any tips on locations!

Thanks!
