Importing/Legalizing our car

We plan to drive with our toddler and two dogs. We find it easier to go by road to be more comfortable. I've been reading that it is a more complicated process to permanently legalize cars. We are both dual citizens, and hoping to move permanently, so hoping that van stays permanently too. Any custom agents you recommend? Do you have to remove everything from the car? Is there a way to get a temporary permit and later get the permanent paperwork once we settle?
