Driving personal goods over the border

Does anyone have experience driving their personal goods across the border? We're not planning to take a ton of stuff, but with 2 large dogs taking up the back of our 4Runner we'll be bringing our clothes, books, and some household items in our 5X8 utility trailer. I was reading up on this process at my local consulate website but it specifically refers to shipping your goods, not transporting yourself.
