Used Vehicle title/registration suggestions

Want to purchase an older (1991) used vehicle to keep on my property down in Baja Sur. Seller is a local friend in our small community. I know that it is legally registered and titled in Mexico, as they are a national from the mainland. I am comfortable with AS IS condition. I do not have a temp/or permanent visa yet, but plan to apply in the next year or so. I have a CFE bill, but only get tourist visas when I drive or fly down. I usually drive, and get all my docs lined up...but since it is already there, I just want to keep it there and figure out how to get it titled and insured properly. I am considering the SD option since vehicle is over 25 years old, and can apparently de done through the mail. Thoughts/suggestions for Baja 4x4 Cruiser.
