To Go or Not to Go

I am a 49-year-old divorced female who is considering purchasing a second home in Lake Chapala for better healthcare, a lower cost of living and an amazing climate. I do not plan to renounce my citizenship in the U.S., as I have relatives who need care in the States. I will simply be traveling a great deal.

As a single woman, is this region too dangerous for me to consider? I am proficient in the use of firearms, but am not sure about regulations in this part of Mexico. Thank you for your thoughts, concerns, advice, etc.
