San Cristobal de las Casas, still a good place to retire ?

We are 7-9 months away from retiring to Mexico. We love cooler weather and plan on moving to San Cris, but it is a little scary watching a group of armed men walking around, and finding out they are basically an extortion group. Should we be looking at other cities ? Thx !
