Group of armed men in San Cristobal de las Casas ???

We are 7-9 months from retiring and were planning on moving to San Cris, but seeing this group of armed men walking around, people hiding out for hours if they were close to the Mercado Norte...it gives us pause. We always have a plan B and C....just in case. We think we will love San Cris, but wondering if we should head for Cholula or Atlixco. We are cool weather lovers and prefer mid size towns over large cities. Thoughts ? Anyone live in San Cris ? Thanks !
