Relocating to Mazatlan

Good evening,
Hopefully with in next few months we will be traveling to Mazatlán to explore the possibility of long-term renting and if we like it eventually relocating. I am retired teacher, and, in the past, I did volunteer in school systems in countries in Central and South America. We have travel to Mexico many times but never the Mazatlán area. I was wondering if someone has information on volunteering as well as perhaps gathering places where expats get together in Mazatlan?
All information will be greatly appreciated.
