What to do about US health insurance

Hello everyone

My girlfriend and I are looking into living overseas (Portugal, Spain, Costa Rica) for three months to see what it's like before committing to a full move. We plan on getting traveler's insurance for that time but we are unsure what to do about our US health insurance.

We are both in our late 50's and are on private health insurance, so it's ridiculously expensive! We really do not want to have to pay for US health insurance for the three months that we are not living in the US but we don't know if that's even possible to avoid while still being able to get health insurance when we return home to the US.

Any suggestions or resources that we could check out would be greatly appreciated.
