Malaria and anti-malarials

Hello. My wife and I are making a first visit to Boquete, Panama for the month of March. Our doctor recommended that we take antimalarials for the duration of our trip. I have tried to research this matter online but the information is conflicting and confusing. Can you please share your impressions whether expats generally take antimalarials or not? Also whether malaria is generally a concern in Boquete? I can't tell how seriously to take it from here.
