First Time Resident in the US -Questions about Process

Hi there,

I think I've got everything sorted to move to the U.S after months of research.

I'm a U.S citizen. I have never lived in the United States, only Canada. But according to everyone I have spoken to (CBP agents through email and phone) I am considered a Returning Resident. I'm moving there this month and I'm moving by air, so I'll have about two check through bags and a carry on consisting of household and personal effects only. I will not be sending anything or have any unaccompanied items.

Okay, so as far as I know I need to bring:

- A complete packing list with me
- Fill out the regular U.S. Customs Declaration Form - 6059B.

Form Question

So, since I'm a returning resident will I be filling out:

Question 15.
Residents - the total value of all goods, including commercial merchandise I/we have purchased or acquired abroad, (including gifts for someone else, but not items mailed to the U.S) and am/are bringing to the U.S. is: $ _________

or

Visitors - the total value of all articles that will remain in the U.S. including commercial merchandise is: $ _________

And, I'm not 100% sure what this means for me. I'm not bringing any gifts. Really I'm just moving my personal and household effects. Nothing large either since I'm flying.

Are there any other forms that they will have me fill out when I go through customs at the Toronto airport? Has anyone gone through this and most importantly: Does anyone have any advice about the process so everything is done correctly? The CBP website and answers I have received from the agents have been a little cryptic.

Thanks in advance! I really just want to do this right.
