visas and cats!

we have a possible opportunity of a 2 year work contract in NZ. Have checked out the visa requiremenys for the job holder and all seems okay, but wondered if anyone had any info on visas for accompanying partners - the info i have seen on the net suggests the partner can only get a nine month tourist visa - can this be correct as i am sure many contractors are accompanied by their partners.
Also, does anyone know of an airline flying to NZ from Europe that allows small pets (a cat) in the cabin - have heard of people transporting pets from US in this way by booking them a seat - really dont want cat in cargo hold, she has all the legal requirements - however any advice on quaranteen would also help - have heard between 30 days and 180!
