Applying for residence ..Help !

Hi
I live in York in the UK with my wife and two year old child.
We are about to start applications for residence in New Zealand.
I am a carpenter by trade but I have not done this for 6 years as I now work in Joinery planning using autocad and SAP.
Does anyone know if I can still apply as a joiner even though I haven't been on the tools for 6 years ?? Will this count against me ??( I have all the Qualifications City and Guilds, time served etc ).

If anyone has undergone or are in the process of applying for residence I would be grateful for any advice.
