Trying to Find Work prior to Residency

My wife and I are planning to relocate to NZ. We have submitted our residency application, but the turn around time is 9-12 Months. If I can secure an Job offer this becomes approx 6 weeks.

I was originally a building surveyor but for the last 10 years have been in Technical IT roles and Business development.

I am thinking of going out for a few weeks to try to get a job, Is it worth while or is there any other way of getting a job offer before our application is processed.
