Should I try NZ again??

Okay I'll try not to blat on for too long...
I moved back to NZ with my Kiwi wife and girls 2 years ago. To make a long and emotionally draining story short, the wheels fell off of my life and I ended up coming back to the US sans wife and kids (she now wants divorce....).
I was devastated by the downright nastiness I was subjected to in Marlborough. I have lived in NZ 3 times before for extended periods and have never had to endure this. I am NOT the loud, brash in-your-face Yank and never expected Kiwis to hold a singular person responsible for the idiotic actions of his government.
So, here's my problem.....I miss my children terribly, have no hope whatsoever of getting custody and so am considering moving back.
Can anyone help me find a city with a reasonable community of Yank expats so I can at least have some people to relate to??
I am considering Wellington but find the housing costs frightening (I will be no more than a substitute teacher until I can find other work). Auckland is just too damn busy for me and Chch is provincial and snobbish in my opinion.
So, any suggestions??
