Where to live in and around Auckland with a small child?

Husband will be working in Auckland Center. We have a 5 yr old who needs preschool. Any ideas of where to live within a 1/2 hr. drive to the center for work? North or across the water and take a boat in daily?
Or any apt suggestions in Auckland that are child friendly?
