long term rentals in Auckland area

We've visited a few times and have looked at buying or building on Waiheke but with new laws that may not be an option. We are in are early 50's and will keep a residence in the US and try to spend around 6 months of our winter somewhere around Auckland working from home. Any thoughts on locating long-term rentals or other options to secure a second home even if we can't buy it? We are visiting at the end of December for 2 weeks and will be looking at at the areas on the coast North of Auckland but we do love Waiheke. Thank you in advance for any ideas.
